TETRA is an acronym for Trans European Trunked RAdio. Or Trans European Trunked Radio Association depending on which early documents you look at. It is now known as TErrestrial Trunked RAdio (Isn't all trunked radio with ground based transmitters?). It was renamed for political and financial reasons. After all if you have Europe in the name other parts of the world may think it is not for them. It was designed to provide digital comunications for the emergency services across Europe. Initially in a Band freed by NATO in the Military airband. 380-390Mhz. It is now ubiquitous in Europe for emergency services use. It was first proposed in the early 1990's most development took place from 1995 and it came into service with UK police between 1999 and 2003 and was later adopted by both UK fire and ambulance services and a number of other government and quasi government organisations. It is soon (as of 2016) to be replaced by a new system based on LTE technology.
